Teachers of Accounting at Two-Year Colleges (TACTYC) was founded in 1974 by a group of innovative educators from the New York area. The first TACTYC meeting Teachers of Accounting at Two-Year Colleges (TACTYC) was founded in 1974
by a group of innovative educators from the New York area. The first
TACTYC meeting was held on March 2, 1974 at Nassau Community College in
Garden City, New York. Under the direction of organizer and founding
president, Professor Florence Cogan of Nassau Community College, a group
of 21 attendees representing eight two-year colleges from the New York
Metropolitan area met. These founding members saw a pressing need for
an organization that would be sensitive to the needs of two-year college
accounting faculty.
Since its creation, TACTYC's primary objective has been and continues to
be the advancement of accounting education. It has always emphasized
the development of creative and innovative teaching and curriculum.
TACTYC was organized to encourage networking on issues of significance
to accounting education. It has served as a forum for sharing
innovative ideas in curriculum, teaching techniques and methodology.
TACTYC has also been a champion of causes important to accounting
education. It has always been a proponent of fair and inclusive
articulation from two to four-year programs and has taken up this cause
on several important fronts:
- In New York state, TACTYC was instrumental in
preventing the curtailment of accounting transfer credit to upper
division institutions.
- TACTYC officers testified at the American
Assembly of College Schools of Business (AACSB) hearings questioning the
continued accreditation of AACSB and successfully lobbied the AACSB to
soften its stand on lower division accounting education. From its
original position as an adversary of two-year colleges, AACSB eventually
became a supporter through TACTYC's lobbying efforts. The AACSB went so
far as to embrace the need for two-year programs and the importance of
the service that two-year colleges provide to accounting education.
- TACTYC board members have also been actively
involved in the work of the Accounting Education Change Commission
(AECC). They have extensively furthered the cause of two-year education
and were instrumental in AECC's strong positive recognition of the
importance of two-year colleges in accounting education.
As an organization begun by two-year educators, TACTYC believe that
innovative and qualitative teaching of accounting is the equal of
accounting research. While traditional research institutions might
refute this, current trends in accounting education support what TACTYC
has been espousing for many years.
Since its inception, TACTYC has been providing conferences as a forum
for discussing issues of importance to accounting education. These
conferences have been held in numerous cities throughout the country
including Albuquerque, Atlanta, Boston, Kansas City, Denver, Portland,
Austin, Fort Worth, Miami and New Orleans all of which have been well
received.
Over time, TACTYC's reputation and stature have grown and TACTYC
currently boasts individual membership from all 50 states and welcomes
institutional members from across the country. While TACTYC is
culturally based among two-year colleges, the issues it supports are
important to all participants in accounting education. It openly
solicits the support and involvement of all individuals and institutions
who share their interest in the improvement of accounting education in
the new millennium.
